Bannon, McConnell. and Ryan. those fuckers are our cross to bear
Quote from a fellow Irish friend
Why Bannon? I counter with “why not?” I can’t think of anyone else on the public stage who is more Shakespearean. Guessing that he’s at a personal apex, while his body is rebelling from the inside out for all the world to see. A walking metaphor of excess. Falstaff if he was raised by wolves.
Soutine probably didn’t like the smell of rotting meat either, but he pushed on because he saw the beauty in decay. In a number of cases, we get so caught up in the revulsion that it overwhelms the poetry of the moment.
A fundamental idea I have about my work is this; artwork should be an open loop. I know it’s cliche, but viewers need to complete the piece themselves. In a perfect situation, every viewer will walk away from a painting with a slightly different experience. My work has to be good and interesting. I can’t be either-or. I’d rather have the work be interesting than good.
When I exhibited the Salesman paintings, people often remarked: “Is that Hillary, is that Trump?” I stepped on my disgust, understanding that it was just Gestalt working in their brains. They were looking at a painting and they thought that it should be what was consuming all their thoughts at the time (summer 2016) the election.
